All horn players deserve access to a great teacher, even (especially) if they live in a rural area, or face other challenges with traveling to lessons. All horn players deserve liberation from the tension, fear and confusion of old school pedagogy. I offer world class French horn instruction online.
“Most people overestimate what they can do in a day, and underestimate what they can do in a year.” - Bill Gates
Spencer Koscik provides online French horn lessons.
“It’s been a pleasure to work with Spencer over his three summers in Aspen. I hope he gets the chance to pass along what we’ve been working on to a younger generation of horn players.”-Andrew Bain; Los Angeles Philharmonic, principal horn
Pros of online lessons include:
Not having to commute anywhere.
Access to a great teacher from anywhere in the world. For students in rural areas, this is their best option for finding the highest quality instruction.
Learning in their own home can increase students’ comfort level, which helps them step out of their comfort zone and progress faster.
Sometimes people are concerned with sound quality before starting online lessons. I have much experience with this and here are the solutions that I have found work best. With an optimal set up, I’m able to diagnose students’ problems with the same accuracy that I can live in person.
Using google meet. Google meet has the least latency and best sound quality of any platform I’ve tried. When using this platform, I find that I can hear everything I need to hear to help students diagnose issues.
Using a USB microphone. For fantastic sound quality, students can purchase a USB microphone for around one hundred dollars. If you get the right one, you have the built in ability to adjust the gain manually on the microphone body. These microphones are very useful for many applications outside of the lesson studio, including for online meetings and for making audition tapes.
Having a lesson in a quiet space. I know it sounds basic, but it is the only way to have the best sound quality transmitted over the internet.
